At 3 months old, you and your baby are really starting to get to know each other. By now, you probably have a good daily routine in place, which helps your baby feel safe and secure. It’s such a comforting feeling knowing that your little one is beginning to understand their world a bit more.

This month marks a huge developmental milestone: your baby is starting to make voluntary movements! That means they’re beginning to move their hands more purposefully, especially when they want to grab something. While they’re getting the hang of reaching and grabbing, they still struggle a bit when it comes to letting go of things once they’ve got a hold of them. You might notice that they try to put anything they can get their hands on into their mouth – be careful because even the tiniest objects can catch their attention! It’s all part of their exploration, though, and they’re learning so much from it.

You’ll also see your baby starting to use their hands in new ways. They’re learning to release things in front of their body and hold their hands there for a moment. Their neck and head control are improving, and you’ll notice them trying to keep their head centered and raise it when they’re on their tummy. Speaking of tummy time, this is when you’ll really start to see their strength building! When your baby is lying on their stomach, they’ll begin to push up on their forearms, lifting their head and chest off the ground. Their legs will almost be fully extended in this position – such an important step for developing the muscles they need for future milestones like rolling over and eventually sitting up.

Speaking of rolling, you might see your baby try to roll from their tummy to their back or even lift their head up or push their chest up with their hands. It’s incredible how much they’re learning to do, even though it might seem small at first!

But perhaps the most exciting development this month is that your baby is starting to experience and express emotions in new ways. They’re becoming more aware of their surroundings and responding to different facial expressions and voices. They’ll recognise your voice, and you might see them turn toward you when they hear you. Your baby will absolutely love it when you sing to them – children’s songs are a big hit at this age! They might even start laughing out loud, and those giggles are absolutely precious. They’ll be making lots of gurgling sounds and trying to “talk” back to you, almost as if they’re having their own little conversation with you. It’s the beginning of real communication, and it’s such a joy to witness.

These next few months are going to be full of amazing milestones, and you’ll be amazed at how much your little one is growing and learning each day. Enjoy every moment, because they’re learning so much – and so are you!

  • By now, your baby’s hands should be loosely open most of the time. If their fists are always clenched, it could indicate increased muscle tone.
  • Your baby isn’t lifting their head or their head falls back when they are raised from a lying position.
  • Your baby isn’t playing with their hands or holding a rattle, even for a short time.
  • One side of your baby’s body seems stronger than the other.
  • Sudden noises don’t startle them.
